halt
halt: stop the computer.
Synopsis
halt
Description
halt flushes its output and asks the kernel to halt the system. Every process ends and its open files are closed, so what was written reaches the disks; then the CPU stops. The machine’s power stays on, and the screens keep what they show. Arguments are ignored.
To turn the machine off, use poweroff(1); to start again, use reboot(1) or the power button.
Exit status
On success halt does not return. If the kernel refuses, it prints the reason on standard error and exits with 1.
